Tips for eating Thailand food when in Thailand

Today I’m covering the topic of eating food while we visited Thailand. It’s a country that has a lot of diversity of flavors. Bursting with a variety that was so new to me. Even tho my Mom made lots of different foods when I was a kid. Man, I do crave me some mango sticky rice! We all loved trying the many food offerings and tastes while visiting Thailand.

A few of the foods to be eating in Thailand!

Khao Soi in Chaing Mai or the Northern region. It has the best crunchy noodles over an amazing curry soup.
Pad Thai is a stir-fried rice noodle dish with scrambled eggs, bean sprouts, and peanuts on top. Also served with a protein such as chicken, tofu or shrimp.

Papaya Salad is shredded young papaya mixed with a slew of ingredients. Long beans, lime juice, tomatoes and topped with chopped peanuts just to name few. As a result, it’s one of my favorite dishes.
Pineapple Fried Rice, a classic and safe dish. So a safe dish to order for kids.
Thai Tea is a creamy sweet iced drink. It goes very well with the spicy food of Thailand as it mellows it out. For example, whenever ordering a spicy dish, I make sure to order a Thai Tea as well.
Mango Sticky Rice has a creamy coconut sauce. You pour as much as you want over freshly sliced mango and soft coconut rice. It’s delicious and just can’t be beaten.
Grilled Satay meat on a stick is pretty much what it sounds like.
Thai Curries in Thailand are so good and delicious and the flavors are endless. From red to green and all in between.

Is the Thai Cooking classes worth it?

Our Thai cooking class was an intimate and immersive experience learning about Thai food and spices. I was surprised at how fun it was. It is very hands-on. Therefore we learned great tips. My favorite part was learning about the spices and herbs they use in Thailand. I was able to recognize what dishes I had eaten them in and it was so cool. When we finished cooking, we sat down to eat amazing Thailand food. So Yes it was worth it.

Our Experience eating Thailand Food and How to order

We ate mango sticky rice and pad thai and learned very quickly how to order our food. For example, we would ask for our meals with no spicy and no chilis. We took the risk and ate street food very often and did not get sick at all. To us, it did not seem risky. As we know people can get food poisoning from nice restaurants in the USA. So here’s our way of deciphering the quality, we would look at the stalls and smell for stinky or strong smells. From that point decide if we would order it. In short, I don’t remember a time when eating Thailand food that our food tasted spoiled or off. We did experience spicy food a few times we forgot to order it with no chilies.

Restaurants Types or Styles in Thailand

  • Street stalls with one or two dishes they specialize in.
  • Small Ma and Pop restaurants with simple seating and menus
  • Mid-price restaurants with more options.
  • Nice high-end restaurants in resort and tourist areas. However still cheaper than similar US restaurants.

  • Night markets with many stands cooking up hot fresh food and others with fresh-cut fruit.
  • Floating markets with boats that you can sit in and order your meal on. To rafts along the docks that make a few dishes and reach up to the dock with your food.
